On April 1, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it is requesting all manufacturers to withdraw all prescription and over-the-counter ranitidine drugs from the market immediately. Ranitidine medications, commonly known by the brand name Zantac and its generic versions, contains a contaminant known as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). The FDA has determined that the impurity in ranitidine products (Zantac) increases over time and may result in consumer exposure to unacceptable levels of this impurity. In addition to asking manufacturers of ranitidine (Zantac) to withdraw their products from the market, the FDA is also advising consumers taking the over-the-counter version to stop taking any tablets or liquid they currently have, dispose of them properly, and not buy any more from other sources.
