Breaking News: The FDA Is Requesting Removal Of All Ranitidine Products (Zantac) From The Market

If you used Zantac or other ranitidine tables (prescription or over-the-counter), then you or your loved one may be entitled to compensation. Please call Zantac injury lawyer Baku Patel at Patel Law, P.C. at (217) 384-1111 to schedule a free consultation.

On April 1, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it is requesting all manufacturers to withdraw all prescription and over-the-counter ranitidine drugs from the market immediately. Ranitidine medications, commonly known by the brand name Zantac and its generic versions, contains a contaminant known as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). The FDA has determined that the impurity in ranitidine products (Zantac) increases over time and may result in consumer exposure to unacceptable levels of this impurity. In addition to asking manufacturers of ranitidine (Zantac) to withdraw their products from the market, the FDA is also advising consumers taking the over-the-counter version to stop taking any tablets or liquid they currently have, dispose of them properly, and not buy any more from other sources. Patients who were taking prescription ranitidine should speak with their heath care professional about other treatment options before stopping the medication.

NDMA is a probable human carcinogen (cancer causing). Exposure to high amounts of NDMA is believed to cause several forms of cancer. It is also extremely toxic to the liver; even small amounts are linked to liver damage. Actually, NDMA was once used to make rocket fuel.

Shortly after this FDA announcement, retailers such as Walmart, Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid pulled both prescription and over-the-counter formulas of Zantac from their shelves. Thus far, 14 generic manufacturers and Zantac’s brand-name manufacturer, Sanofi, have recalled the medication in the United States.

Presently, there are ongoing lawsuits claiming Sanofi and other defendants knew about the dangers of NDMA in Zantac but failed to properly warn the public. As stated above, NDMA is claimed to cause various forms of cancer.

Zantac lawyer Baku Patel at Patel Law, P.C. is currently accepting clients who were using Zantac or other ranitidine tablets for at least 1 year prior to being diagnosed with one or more of the following forms of cancer.

  • Bladder
  • Stomach
  • Liver

What is Zantac?

Zantac is the brand name for a ranitidine medication. It was a very popular and widely used medication to reduce a body’s production of stomach acid. It was also used to treat stomach ulcers, acid indigestion, GERD and heartburn. It was available both as a prescription as well as over-the-counter.

How does Zantac cause cancer?

In September 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that small amounts of NDMA were detected in ranitidine medications, including the most popular brand name drug Zantac. NDMA is classified as a B2 carcinogen, which basically means that it is a probable human carcinogen. According to the World Health Organization, exposure to high amount of NDMA is believed to cause gastric and colorectal cancer. Even small amounts of NDMA is extremely toxic to the liver and linked to liver damage. In fact, NDMA was once used to make rocket fuel.
