When you are charged with drunk driving in Illinois, you face two threats to your driving privileges. The first is a summary suspension of your driver's license upon your arrest. The second is a criminal suspension/revocation if you are convicted.
Before you are convicted of a DUI charge, you are subject to the following driver's license suspension periods:

| If you refuse a Breathalyzer or field sobriety test | One year | Three years |
If you are convicted of DUI, you face the following consequences to your driving privileges:
| First DUI conviction | Minimum of one-year loss of full driving privileges. Ignition interlock required for restricted driving privileges |
| Second DUI conviction | Minimum five-year loss of full driving privileges for a second conviction in a 20-year period. Ignition interlock required for restricted driving privileges |
| Third DUI conviction | Minimum 10-year loss of full driving privileges. Ignition interlock required for restricted driving privileges |
| Fourth DUI conviction | Lifetime loss of driving privileges |
